Chapter of the Lanugo Brush
Brush as one of China's long history of the four treasures of study; the performance of its colorful culture and art can become the quintessence of China. The value of Brush collections is nothing less than the jade jewelry. The making of “Lanugo Brush” has been a custom since the Tang Dynasty. The Lanugo Brush is the making of brush from the infant’s hair after his/her birth. It is the only souvenir that the infant has after he/she gets separated from the mother’s womb. It is in the most natural form and highly precious to both the child and the parents.
According to a legend, there was a student who brought his Lanugo Brush for his Scholar Examinations. Being thankful to his parents and feeling them by his side, he wrote with strong determination and great energy. He became the Scholar for his batch. Hence, the Lanugo Brush is also known as the Scholar Brush. As a result, it has become a norm for the Scholars to use the Lanugo Brush at that moment. Lanugo Brush also became a form to symbolize the literary family of the characterization, to commerate the collection, tokens of love, etc. and such was spread to even Japan and Taiwan.
Traditions
All mothers would have high hopes and best wishes for their child; health and safety for the child, successful in life, to embrace happiness and peace. Hence, there are many traditional rituals to celebrate new baby:
Shave: Shaving is unique to the ancient custom, symbolizes his new life; his life would start from scratch and gets a complete life.
To mold: After shaving of one’s hair, baby will proceed to shave his eyebrows, symbolizes the removal of bad luck. It is a form of sacrificial ritual, as a form of respect for his forefathers.
Omen: Rolling of red eggs on the head for three times; symbolizes good luck as well as good marriage.
Robust: After the visit to the barber, baby is to bathe in a bathtub with two big rocks placed inside. It symbolizes good health.
Wisdom: Also include two onions in the bathtub, "clever" as the homonyms, symbolizes wisdom.
Wealth: Also include gold pieces and then put a 6 coin. It symbolizes good luck and wealth.
Transmission: The shaving of baby’s hair allows management and making of the lanugo brush.
Each of the ceremonies and rituals symbolize the love and best wishes the parents have for their child.
Details and Forms of Langugo Brush
Lanugo Brush in accordance to the amount of hair collected can be made into three different forms of brush :
1. Single Brush
Single-brush can be served as an expression of love for oneself or others. It is ideal for working adults as it symbolizes success in career and wealth. For parents who want their children to have flying colours in examinations, single-brush also served as the Scholar Brush. By placing the Scholar Brush on the child's study table, or placing it against the wall in the child's room, symbolizes wisdom and knowledge.
2. Two-Brush
(One for the child to keep, the other for him to write/One for the child, one for the parents)
Two-brush can be served as a token of exchange and hence provides the perfect blend for affection and love. In addition, it can also serve as a memento for the baby's parents: an expression of love. It embodies the filial piety of a child; his life bearing in mind of the love and care the parents have showered. It also leaves a permanent memorial for the child, the Lanugo Brush (Their own hair) to write his own way of life! In addition, the Lanugo Brush allows a more nurturing childhood for the baby; a more profound love for the Chinese culture.
3. Couple Brush.
Couple brush can served as a Love Token Brush. In ancient China, betrothal is in accordance to the parents' will. Due to forced propriety and social pressure, exchange tokens of love between men and women are generally private; unknown to the others. Now, apart from expensive diamonds, jewelry, necklaces, rings, etc., as tokens of love, the love token (brush) made from both parties' hair is also a good choice. We believe that couples who keep the brush with them, can bring good luck, and ultimately realize their aspirations and good love.
Couple Brush is ideal for newly married couples. Su Shi Poetry: "There is no doubt in love when it comes to hair knot in a couple." Procedure for Ordering
1）Do place the umbrical cord/hair inside a red packet, write down the name on the red packet.
2）Choose your favourite brush/chop, then include the words/phrases you would like to have on the brush/chop.
*A brush can include maximum 3 details. For eg, Baby's name, Baby's Chinese birthdate, Baby's Western birthdate, Parents' name, or well wishes.
*A chop can ONLY engrave the baby's name.
3）Please fill up the details in the application form attached below, then send an email with the attachment to the following email address : memento.of.love@gmail.com
* Please ensure that your details are correct, we will not be responsible for any changes during the course of production.
- We will contact you in no more than 2-3 days after you have sent your application to our mailbox.
- We will deliver the final product to you in no more than a month from the day we got your hair/baby's umbrical cord
